Most states have a motorcycle safety course in which you get your license upon completion of the course. The road test is waived because you are actually doing the road test during the course. The course I took began Friday evening with a classroom-type setting (films, etc.). On Saturday, everyone was furnished a 250 cc motorcycle to ride. Instructors demonstrated certain maneuvers and each of us would practice over and over until we could handle the bike comfortably. Sunday we did these moves and were graded; those who passed received their license. This safety course teaches you so much and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Four weeks after completing this course, I rode my bike to the Myrtle Beach Fall Rally which is 500 miles each way. It really depends on what type of bike you want. If you are wanting a “Harley style” bike, then go with a sportster or Honda shadow. If you want a sport bike, I would suggest a couple year old Suzuki gsxr 600. You really don’t want to buy a brand new bike as your first. Give yourself time to acclimate yourself to it.

Hi, of course it depends on your budget, what kind of riding you do, as well as what kind of bikes set your heart racing.
Do remember that biking is a relatively risky pursuit and the most important thing is to stay alive. Don’t be a macho nut and buy something super fast.
Look at the bikes that are considered easy to continue learning on, and aren’t going to cost a fortune. The Japanese manufacturers all have straightforward bikes that meet this description, but I would consider models with twin cylinder engines as they tend to be a bit lighter, more fun, and more economical.
You’ve got the Kawasaki ER5 and ER6, which are both good bikes, and the Honda CB500. Suzuki make the SV650 which is more akin to a sports bike and has a great reputation. All these bikes also have reasonably low seat heights and can all be restricted to 33BHP easily. These are the bikes which many training schools use for instruction and this tells you that they’re good for continued learning.

For the U turn, which is where I and many others have stuffed up over the years, keep your revs reasonably high and control your speed with the back brake and clutch.
When you pull out at a junction, make sure there is a whopping big gap to move into; bigger than you actually need if you can get it. You’ll get marked down if you force another vehicle to brake; if it’s serious enough you’ll automatically fail.
Remember your basics. Lifesavers. Every one missed is a minor mistake. Mirror, signal, lifesave, manoeuvre at every single junction or lane change, and make sure you start the sequence fairly early.
If your instructor has been doing what every other riding school in the country does, you’ll already have been over the roads that the examiner will take you which does give you a surprising degree of help.

P.S. CBT’s nothing to worry about. Just listen to the instructor. And it’s not a pass/ fail thing either, except that if you’re really poor they won’t let you out on the road. And don’t worry about your first day on the 500cc bike… it sits on the road far better than any 125 does. More stable and easier to handle.
