Harley Davidson Sportster Good For A New Rider?
i have been considering this for a while and a sportster seemed like a good choice. i have always liked harleys and i have read in several books and they say that sportsters are a good way to start off. the only thing is, im 6′3. is that too tall? i’m not overweight or anything like that i just wondered if my height would be an issue. as far as experience goes, i have ridden my uncles goldwing with him a couple times. but that was only observing, i used to ride dirt bikes quite a bit. i know that there is quite a diffirence between dirt bikes and motorcycles. but at least its something. i’m also planning on taking the harley davidson riding safety course. so besides what i asked, and suggestions for a new rider?
Is It Illegal For A Motorbike Rider To Ride A Bike On L Plates When They Already Have A Full Bike Licence?
The Highway Code Reg 16, Section 87 states…
“Plates MUST conform to legal specifications and MUST be clearly visible to others from in front of the vehicle and from behind. Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles).”
“Should” means as stated in the highway code that it isn’t illegal but is advised and could be used as evidence in court proceedings.
What Gear Should I Be Looking To Purchase As A First Time Rider?
Hi I will be purchasing a motorcycle for the first time very soon and wanted to know what kind of gear I should be looking to get as well. Also how much I should be looking to spend. I don’t want to go all ‘Wild Hogs’ and buy a bunch of stuff I won’t really need but I don’t want to get too cheap and not get something that would help with safety or make riding more enjoyable.
Everyone agrees you need a good helmet, gloves, boots and jacket. Is there anything else I should be looking for. Also should I worry about getting an armored jacket in case of an accident? With prescription glasses would a 3/4 helmet be better then a full helmet? If I ride to work in dress pants would I need to wear chaps or would it be fine w/o them for the short commute?
I welcome all input. Thanks in advance.
Multiple Questions From A New Rider?
I am looking to get a motorcycle. I had a 150cc scooter some time back and it gave me the itch…
First, I am 6′3″ and 250 lbs. I don’t know how much that matters, but it may help in your considerations.
-What is the best class to take to learn how to properly ride a motorcycle and get the best safety course? I am particularly interested in knowing how to lay down a bike if it comes down to it and how to handle the bike if I were to lose control due to a blown tire, hitting a rock, sliding over loose gravel, etc. Bonus if you can give me a specific course in the DFW area.
-What would be a good beginner bike for me? I want something I can feel comfortable learning with, but also growing with. I would like to take it to work (25 miles each way, straight highway, but I do a lot of downtown driving as well) within 6 months (or whenever I feel comfortable with it). I prefer cruisers and I prefer something with decent efficiency, but with enough pickup to get me past a big rig. I don’t have a lot to spend, but plan on around $6,000-$8,000 with all gear. (less is better)
-What accessories would you recommend? I work in IT, so I would have to carry my laptop around with me.
Is there anything I should know about starting out?
Thanks for the help!
New Female Rider In Need Of Advice On What Bike To Get….?
I’m getting ready to take my motorcycle training and safety course and get my license. I’m a female 5′2 and I am interested in a sports bike (not interested in a cruiser) I’v been shopping around and found that the only bike I can put both feet flat on the ground is a ninja 250cc. I tried the ninja 650cc and I could only touch the ground on both sides with the balls of my feet. I keep hearing that I will outgrow a 250 very quickly and was wondering if anyone could give me advice or their experience with this. I wont be riding long distances, just basically to school and back. About 10 miles each way with very little freeway time. I have been told that the 250 doesn’t have enough power for freeway use. Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appriciated.
