It really depends on what type of bike you want. If you are wanting a “Harley style” bike, then go with a sportster or Honda shadow. If you want a sport bike, I would suggest a couple year old Suzuki gsxr 600. You really don’t want to buy a brand new bike as your first. Give yourself time to acclimate yourself to it.

Well basically the story is, i’ve got a 600cc motorbike in my back garden which i really like but don’t want to sell.
so what i’m thinking to do is to restrict it to a 125cc bike, now i know that it will ruin the bike over time but i honestly don’t mind that. But the other thing i want to know is that how much would it cost on insurance for a 17 year old, if they would insure someone on that type of motorbike

Hi, of course it depends on your budget, what kind of riding you do, as well as what kind of bikes set your heart racing.
Do remember that biking is a relatively risky pursuit and the most important thing is to stay alive. Don’t be a macho nut and buy something super fast.
Look at the bikes that are considered easy to continue learning on, and aren’t going to cost a fortune. The Japanese manufacturers all have straightforward bikes that meet this description, but I would consider models with twin cylinder engines as they tend to be a bit lighter, more fun, and more economical.
You’ve got the Kawasaki ER5 and ER6, which are both good bikes, and the Honda CB500. Suzuki make the SV650 which is more akin to a sports bike and has a great reputation. All these bikes also have reasonably low seat heights and can all be restricted to 33BHP easily. These are the bikes which many training schools use for instruction and this tells you that they’re good for continued learning.
I would also encourage you to continue to learn about riding. Do consider joining your local branch of the Advanced Motorcyclists Group. Best wishes, Domster.

you didn’t state what kind of bike??? but here are a few that I or my friends have used in the past that do good work for dirt bikes. Legislation says up to 660cc and power to weight of 150kw/tonne.
The Ducati 600 SS is in the list, but i’d hate to scratch all that plastic WHEN I drop it for the first time, so probably wouldn’t look at getting one :

I’m 16 years old, 5′ 10″ and weigh 170 pounds and i was thinking to buy a YAMAHA YZF 600R for my first bike… I HAVE TAKEN THE SAFETY COURSE…i have rode mopeds when i was 12 years old…after taking the safety class i seem pretty confident is riding…i’m going on vacation to india next week for 5 weeks where i will be driving scooters and motorcycles A LOT..from what i have read, this bike is a good beginner bike because it isn’t as powerful as the R6 and is more comfortable and forgiving…it is also pretty cheap..a year 2003 you can get for under $3000…if anyone has this bike or knows some pros or cons about it i would like to hear about them…is this a good beginner bike? i really dont want to start on a 250 or 500 ninja because i know i will grow out of it within a week…i wont try to do stupid wheelies and crap like that…i’ve seen some accidents and it isn’t pretty…i want this bike to go to work and school and just to ride around town with my friends with…thanks!!!

The Highway Code Reg 16, Section 87 states…
“Plates MUST conform to legal specifications and MUST be clearly visible to others from in front of the vehicle and from behind. Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles).”
“Should” means as stated in the highway code that it isn’t illegal but is advised and could be used as evidence in court proceedings.

also can you drive indefinately as a learner bike driver or do you have to take your test at some point in time.
with fuel costing so much was thinking of getting a smal bike to go to work and ditching the carfor some journeys.
I dont want to have to sit a test tho.

I had just bought a motorcycle – I know how to ride but hadn’t gotten my license. I had bought the night before and was just test driving on a small 30mph road right next to where I was keeping it before I got the safety inspection on it to see if there was anything I needed to fix first. I was going to register get my license insurance the whole deal that day. But I got pulled over on my quick ride 200 ft away from where I was going to park it and got cited for no insurance, registration, license and they impounded it. What are my options any chance of getting it dropped? – I have it registered now and will have license and insurance before I go to court
