matt…if it was lubed up correctly you wouldn’t need to get it done so often….tightening a chain is a Pretty simply job ,but theres no way im going to tell you how to shorten a chain…
if you do it wrong it comes off, wraps round the rear wheel, locks it up,your over the bars and your dead…
i advise you to get a new chain and sprocket set fitted[o-ring type] and buy a can of spray chain lube…

shouldnt have to do it more than once or twice a year unless you are really launching that bike hard by drag racing it. easy job, get the back tire off the ground so that the upper and lower chain length is relaxed.Otherwise with the tire on the ground it wont adjust right. Now at the rear of the bike on each side of the tire behind the axle is a adjuster nut with a locking nut right behind it.So first loosen the locking nut so that the adjusting nut will turn. Then I like to take some black nail polish to mark the top of each adjusting nut so I can keep track of how many turns it has made. Now turn the adjuster on each side a half turn at a time untill you have about a half inch of freeplay in the chain.now tighten the locking nut up and lower the bike, all done! as for taking out a link you need a chain brake or a grinder. easier to show you how then to describe.

If you do a lot of miles once a week is reasonable. If your chain has stretched so much that you’ve run out of adjustment then it’s knackered – don’t take a link out, get a new one. Checking and adjusting the chain is an easy job to do yourself – if you don’t know how get a mate to show you or get your bike handbook or even a Haynes manual. A Scottoiler or similar will pay for itself as your chain / sprockets can last twice as long.

I lube my chain as often as i can and check it’s slack every time i get onto it.
I probably adjust it about once a month if not sooner as I do a lot of miles.
You should never shorten a chain, why you ask the number of links is directly proportionate to the number of sprocket teeth.
Standard sprockets have one odd tooth sprocket and an even number of chain links The reason being is that the chain is designed to “HUNT” around the sprocket. such that if you marked a tooth and a link and rotated the wheel so that the chain makes one full rotation the sprocket tooth would be out by at least one tooth this evens out the wear of the chain and sprockets. if you shortened the chain you will effect this ability to hunt and your chain would wear out twice as fast. keep it cleaned keep it oiled /lubed up keep it adjusted in tolerances
