Having been riding my Harley since 2005, I have had to deal with, maybe once or twice a year, the occasional motorist who seems to either have an extreme disregard for my safety as the expense for them having their lane of choice, or even a few who seem downright intent on messing with me. Luckily I’ve been able to roll back the throttle and leave these nuisances behind me, but lately had a riced out Mustang that not only thought I needed to be bump-drafted (didn’t give him the chance to bump but wasn’t gonna risk it either) but he had the capability to keep up with me as I tried to lose him on my way home, on the wide open highways here in Iowa where the only thing slowing me down was my Harley’s sprocket ratio, where the engine at 100mph starts literally shaking the bike apart. I’ve had to upgrade my mirrors to get them to stay where I want them aimed when hitting these RPMs. Luckily, I was able to use two 18 wheelers to bait him into following me into the offramp only lane, and then shift lanes into being in front of the semi’s, with the gap I shifted lanes through closed moments after I had taken it, forcing the mustang to exit. The lane-shift in front of the semi’s was not dangerously close, but the speeds were too high for my taste. Long story short, I pulled off on the next exit and went into a diner for a nice bathroom break and to let the adrenaline out of my system.
After all this, I told this to one of my friends who has been riding since 2002 (although on an R1 for a few, now on a Hayabusa) and said, somewhat jokingly, that “Don’t drivers like this make you just want to weld a bracket onto your fork tube to always carry a MAC-10 in there so you at least have some defense?” to which he replied that he actually keeps a cheap 357 revolver up in the cowls of his Hayabusa for just that reason, and even mentioned that he has only “had to fire it once” although he did not elaborate. I would probably say I believe him about 80% probability.
Now yes there are legality issues one has to consider. But when a street racing uninsured punk decides risking my life with his car sounds like fun, then it’s natural law to say that I have the same right to turn the tables on him in defense of my own life. But the question is not really whether it’s justified or not, to carry a pistol for self defense in this situation, the question is just simply, DO people carry for this reason? Even a .22 to pop a radiator would stop a tailgating wanna-be hit-and-run driver, I would think.

I think the clever engineering/race bike image is a bust.
The engineering was inspired by bikes from 50+ years ago (like the Vincent Lightning) and doesn’t flow through the entire design (nothing fancy about the fairings, seats, fenders, storage or anything else). I also feel there is a limited market for “racing” bikes with V-twin motors. Harley-Davidson does much better selling community, touring and freedom. Those are all more appealing to me than BIG SPEED on a public road.
So what can Buell sell as an image, to get more people interested in their bikes?
==> Small group rides?
==> Friendship?
==> Commuting?
==> Weekend rides?
==> Track days?
==> Sport touring?
==> “The Pace” (fast corners, easy straight)?
==> Exotic vacations?
==> Safety?
==> Completely developed bikes that fit the real world?
What do you think will work to catch the public imagination better than racing twins and exotic engineering?

I am a beginner. I have been riding off-road bikes for years though. I am just shy of 6ft and a little over 200lbs. I don’t want to start too small and have to turn around and sell but I don’t want to eat pavement either.
I am going to take the drivers safety course before I purchase. How do you choose when no one lets you test drive??
Also, my boyfriend is looking at sport bikes as well. He had a Harley in the past and is over 6′3″ 300lbs. Any suggestions?

I dont wanna look stupid on a lil bike but I want something in my budget. I dont mind getting an older bike as long as it looks nice cuz I’m a noobie at riding. I dont even have my license yet but I plan on enrolling into a safety course as soon as I get a bike so I can go get my license. Question is seeing as how i’m this big (though I carry it well mostly in my *** and thighs ) what size bike should i get to keep me from looking stupid? I’ve been looking on ebay at the V-start 1100’s and the Boulivards, and Vulcans, and Mauraders I was thinking i should probably get something less that 2002 year wise, and 1100 cc engine size or larger? any ideas and any places where I can get a good deal?

I’ve been living with my roommate who is deaf for a year and half. He is the biggest risk taker I’ve ever known. He’s pretty much always seeking out something dangerous to do and thrives on it.. He do commercial diving for living, since he work only part time, he often have a lot of free time. He used to hang out with his girlfriend until about a year ago, he dumped her because she wanted him to quit his job because it is dangerous, stop riding motorcycle, sky diving, and many other things.
So ever since that, he has never dated anyone seriously. He has a couple girls who would come over to either cuddle or have sex with him. What bother me is, almost every time one of those girls comes over, the next day he would have lot of bite bruise, cuts, and scratches all over his body. This never happened when he was with his girlfriend.
Recently he was seeing one of my friends for a bit. They clicked together great, in fact he stop sleeping with all those girls, dramatically reduce dangerous activity he does, and other things. However he ends up dump her after she got upset over the fact he did rock climbing without safety harness or rope. He says he’s afraid that she’d try to stop him from doing things that he wants to. Also he says the other reason is, he really doesn’t want any kids ever.
It is upsetting to me and my other roommate. We both really care about him and he’s a very sweet and loving person who has so much to offer. But it seems like he’s throwing his life away doing dangerous activity and sleeping with those girls.
How can we get him to see that he’s throwing his life away over those silly things?

I am buying my first 150cc scooter (top speed 60mph) this upcoming weekend.
Some people have posed “horror stories” about how every motorcyclist will likely break at least one bone no matter how careful they are through things like being rear-ended or side-swiped by a car who does not see them, getting their tires caught in a groove on the road, and slipping in rain.
I am wondering where the best (smoothest/least traffic) roads are to travel on with my new scooter, safest times to travel on each road, and a few extra safety precautions that can help. I am planning to travel within the area between Reliant park and The Marquee shopping center.

I AM taking an MSF course on Friday and Saturday…but I also realize the best I can do is avoid areas where dangerous situations often occur altogether.

I travel the National Highway by motorbike most days and can tell you with absolute certainty that it is getting out of hand. The biggest culprits are the bus drivers. Collectively they are as dangerous as any terrorist group anywhere. The police seem to have been completely overwhelmed by the situation and are not trained or equipped to deal with it. I see things each day that beggar belief. On several occasions I’ve come around corners to see 3 lanes of speeding buses and trucks coming straight at me. These cowboys don’t care less. You get out of their way or you die. They race each other up hill, down dale, around corners, through built up areas and amongst school kids on their way to and from school. In my area the majority of road users are forced to travel on the apron which can be 0-6 feet wide. You share the apron with rice growers who spread tons of rice out for drying either side of the road this time of year, herders of buffalo, cattle, sheep, goats and ducks. Oxen drawn carts, various small vehicles, tractors, motorcycles, battery powered bicycles and bicycles. Throw into this mix school children riding 2-5 abreast and that is pretty much what you have to negotiate. Then there’s the bottle necks. The police in my area stop trucks and buses some days for a bit of revenue collecting but that’s about it. Drivers north and south know within minutes where they are and will take evasive action if required. All traffic will slow down to pass them then its like someone drops a flag somewhere and the demolition derby begins again. I’ve come to the conclusion that most problems begin at school age. The kids show no respect for the road or other road users and seem to have little or no idea about road safety issues. This they take into adulthood. And there seems to be a belief in this country that to give way is to lose face. I don’t know what the answer is. Any thoughts?

Hello I am in High School and well I am looking for a car.
To be precise I am not looking for a compact car,a big SUV like a Cadillac or a gas guzzler like a Hummer.
I want a Jeep like car or Sports SUV that is not very old like the 80’s.Something that you can drive into the woods and also something that can haul a small supply trailer holding two motorcycles or an ATV and also I would like it to be able to take a punch and still keep going.I know it sounds a little bit two redneckish but I am a Mexican born legal resident who is fond of outdoors southern life.Also I consider safety a major priority and to add: I have a budget of 6000.00$ but my parents have offered me alot more but at a somewhat modest 15,000.00 budget.So please any suggestions on a car for me?

1) Seperation of church and state is a LAW that prohibits religion playing a role in policy making decisions. I understand the countries voting due to religion, but for all the people who will say “god says its wrong” please read this first. Your answer is null according to the Federal Government. Please don’t give me Bible or religious quotes, or answers as this law nulls them.
2) The word Marriage. If you would like to sanctify the word marriage as a religous term, then why is it a term used to specify a government act? Marriage does not have to happen in a church. If religion is purely religious, then shouldent athiests be forbidden from marrying? Or any religion that did not coin the term marriage? Therefore shouldent all legal marriages become obsolete to be replaced by the term civil union while “marriage” can be a church ceremony without legal aspects?
Again if your going to say gay marriage is wrong because marriage is religious, this point nullifys your argument. It is merely a mis-name of a government union according to the books.
From now on I will refer to everything as “civil unions” as not to confuse people with “marriage”
3) Reproduction. If civil unions were for the sole purpose of reproduction, then shouldent all infertile couples, or couples past the reproduction age not be allowed to enter into this union?
4) Choice. There is an arguement that homosexuality is a choice. There is psychological evidence pointing to it being biological but I do not have to go into that to prove my point. Neo nazi’s have a right to freedom of speech, to spread their ideas, to practice their ways. They have the freedom of choice according to the law. A man on TV saying that he hates the president is legal because he has the freedom of speech to say this. People sky dive, ride motorcycles, and surf despite these being dangerous activities because it is their freedom of choice. You are allowed to use contrceptives according to the law because it is a freedom of choice. What then makes the choice of homosexuality wrong? It is not any more physically harming then any other form of lifestyle. (Yes aids WAS prevelent among homosexual men. This is no longer the case. Homosexual std’s are roughly on par with hetersexual ones. And hetero couples can and do have anal sex)
5) Gays are bad for children. Simple, show me proof. There is statistically NO reliable data proving that gays rape children any more or less than straight. They cannot even accuratly judge how many homosexuals are in existance, much less how many rape children in comparison. Many homosexuals are afraid to admit their homosexual due to prejudice. This skews numbers, alot.
Some facts about gays:
If a gay couples has been together for 50 years and one is hospitalized, the other has no legal right to be able to see their loved one. One could die without the other ever being able to see them.
There is NO law in many states for job security against homosexuals. If you are a homosexual you CAN legally be fired for being homosexual, even if there is no other reason.
There is no law against school safety for homosexuals.
Gays who fight for your freedom in the military can be kicked out for being homosexual. Are you going to take their place? Your tax dollars are paying for their trial.
Even if you dont believe in marriage, do you believe in human rights?
Why then is it illegal according to the law?

ok. i’m 16. have ‘intermediate’ drivers license.. (same as full, except can’t drive 12:30-5am)
i’ve read that you have to be at least 16 yrs to get license, but if under 18 have to take mototrycle safety course at approved place..
so technically, i can get it???
cause someone at my school was absolutely convinced you had to be 18 period to even think about getting you license for motorcycles…
can anyone help me out? remember i’m in Iowa…
